VATE is an independent, not for profit organisation that aims to foster the highest quality teaching of English throughout Victoria. Established in 1960, VATE nurtures a community of teachers of English and teacher educators committed to the advancement of the profession. We were invited to contribute a design towards their Annual Report, as well as draw up a template presentation for teachers to be able to use throughout the VATE network.
Research
To understand better the nature of our audience, we conducted initial interviews with some of the professionals within VATE's network. After consolidating the data, we narrowed down the key average use case for the slide template.
Concept development
For both the report and the series of slide templates, we wanted to highlight VATE's history within the English teaching community and its history as an organisation. We then contrasted this with a contemporary feel, particularly for the template design, to account for the slight change in audience.
Application
We worked with VATE to produce both digital and print versions of the Annual Report, opting for a bold burnt orange to strengthen the contemporary approach. The series of templates reflected some of VATE's other designs, and favoured web accessibility across multiple platforms, taking particular care with colour contrast ratios and typeface selection.

The Outcome
VATE has seen successful uptake and use of the material we designed. Teaching professionals have made successful use of the series of presentation slide templates and their AGM reported positive critical feedback regarding the design and visualisations.
